The remains of the Mercury Atlas 1 spacecraft at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson. The unmanned spacecraft was destroyed during launch on July 29, 1960. That was less then 2 months after President Kennedy announced his plans to land a man on the Moon. |
