In Petersberg National Battlefield at the entrance to the tunnel dug by former Pennsylvania coal miners serving in the Union Army. They dug a tunnel 510 feet long that reached under Confederate lines. They then placed 8,000 pounds of black powder in the tunnel. The morning of July 30, 1864 they lit the fuse. The Union attack that followed turned into a blood bath as the Union soldiers became trapped in the crater. |
