| In the Petersburg National Battlefield where the "battle of the crater" took place on July 30, 1864. Union troops dug a tunnel under Confederate lines and filled it with explosives. The resulting expolsion created a crater 170 feet long 60 feet wide and 30 feet deep. Advancing Union troops became traped in the crater and were slaughtered, almost 6,000 Union soldiers were killed. |
